A Place for Art

Swipe to discover. Create paths at your fingertips. A Place For Art is a companion piece to the publication that explores the 40 year history of the University of Wollongong's Art Collection, arguably one of the most accessible and diverse art collections in the country.

The app is developed as part of a research project that explores new interaction design techniques that support the understanding of objects, their context and their relationships. Our goal is to provide visitors with sustained, positive experiences of museum collections. We want it to be beautiful, captivating and pliable because we are attracted to beautiful, captivating things. We're also looking at ways of blending the physical environment : the campus, the museum and gallery, with the virtual : showing works that are nearby to you, with connections to similar works elsewhere.

The project is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between the Faculty of Creative Arts and the Centre for Digital Ecosystems at the University of Wollongong. It's part of a wider discipline, called cultural analytics, that explores how computational methods can be used to support the understanding, visualisation and communication of artistic works and material culture. It's an experiment : an exciting project in an incredibly fertile field of study. We hope that it provides a playful, positive experience of the collection.
